English is life. Through the study of Literature and Language, students are able to experience the world critically and empathically. Students at Chesterfield will leave as articulate and imaginative thinkers who are able to engage with the profound nature of modern and past society, being able to communicate their thinking effectively through spoken and written forms in an appropriate, articulate and cohesive manner.

This department aims to develop each individual to their full potential and to encourage them to realise their own uniqueness in a community as a whole so that they can learn from and contribute to society. It aims to foster confidence and enjoyment in making art through the development of skills, understanding and imagination and to introduce a vocabulary so that pupils may be critically aware of their own work and that of other pupils, artists, craft-workers and designers.

Students develop an awareness of the context of the business world around them and apply both theoretical and analytical thinking to business decision making. They are able to deduce information from a range of sources and expand their perceptions of business strategy.

We aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills which will enable them to problem solve, plan, design, develop and test solutions to real life problems. Students learn, understand and are able to recall safe and secure practices within a workshop environment. They apply these skills to develop an understanding of hand tools, machines and a variety of materials. These skills will allow students to be independent in their use and hopefully give them confidence in the use of them in future life.

Drama is about life. We aim to broaden student’s horizons allowing them to explore and question the world around them. Drama embraces the whole curriculum and students will develop skills that allow them to access many subjects. Students should be able to work independently as well as in group environments with confidence and resilience. These skills will allow our students to function effectively and confidently in adult life.

We aim for students to……. • gain knowledge and understanding about what constitutes a healthy balanced diet; particularly in view of current challenges in today’s society and the growing concern about childhood obesity
- to understand the impact of dietary choices on both long and short term health • to know ‘where food comes from’ and the impact this has on the quality of the food they eat • to be aware of the moral issues related to food waste, for example homelessness and those in society who struggle to feed themselves • to have a knowledge and understanding of the environmental issues related to food production i.e carbon footprint/food miles and the importance of seasonality • to develop and demonstrate a range of cooking skills that will enable students to prepare healthy, well balanced meals in accordance with government guidelines for healthy eating.

Our intent is for the curriculum to promote a curiosity about the world. All students will have an understanding of their local place and how they are connected to the rest of the world. They will become global citizens, who consider how their actions affect others. They will be able to discuss their impact on their local and global environment, so that they are able to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

The History Curriculum empowers learners to build a deeper understanding of the present by engaging with and questioning the past. We aim to help them develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage as well as appreciate social and cultural diversity. Learners will engage with a wide variety of evidence and interpretation and develop an understanding of how to apply and write historical concepts.

Music is part of young people’s everyday life; it is all around them. Studying music at school provides opportunities to develop skills including learning instruments, reading music and playing as part of an ensemble. It improves understanding of music history, cultures and traditions. Music provides performance opportunities raising confidence and self-esteem. Studying music helps develop understanding and meaning of the music they listen to. Music is the pathway to future careers in music.

P.E & Sport
To motivate and engage pupils in an active and healthy lifestyle. We aim to provide them with a framework of knowledge and skills which will empower them to be able to do so. To provide them with the confidence and skill to be active members of the community by volunteering in some capacity. As future parents we aim to prepare them to promote physical activity as a way of life and engage with individuals in their care (physical literacy). Physical Education delivers life skills throughout the curriculum; team work, cooperation, resilience, leadership and an understanding that to be good at something you need to practice. An ability to set goals and understand that you may at first fail and not be afraid to do so and have the capacity to continue until you do succeed.

We strive to improve their communication skills, their social interactions and interpersonal skills so that they can make themselves more marketable in the next stage of their life.

Our pupils will become confident and creative with an ability to explore the subject. To become independent thinkers and creators. To respect and value work from different abilities and genres. To consider the effect of environmental concerns in the fashion and textile industry and society (e.g. use of materials, recycling…). To use the subject and its approach to learning to have a calming effect on them, a release, and have a more rounded outlook on life.
